This was just to show that tricks and illusions are for sure important in faking an actual human being. When I said superhuman (poor choice of words, my b) I meant that the reactions of enemies would be far, far quicker than humans' and thus making them completely unfair as opponents. You could implement Alien's level of complexity or any other you can think of into Elizabeth and I do not feel the game would be improved by it - So I would call that a waste of resources and time for the game that we got.īy your own definition of bad AI, "superhuman" Elizabeth is, if anything, bad AI. Not every game necessitates complexity in every aspect. I personally feel that Elizabeth was smart enough to service the narrative. It might be improved by being more complex, or it might not. You might feel like it's too simple in Bioshock's case and that they should've done more or different, and that's all very valid.ĪI, as it pertains to gaming, does not depend on being good for it to exist. And most of what you mentioned doesn't involve AI either.īut it is and it does! Pathfinding, detecting objects, acting according to previous outcomes, it's all AI. You still don't seem to understand that nothing Elizabeth does is AI. But I do believe it's not just about the complexity. Even if she was technically invincible.īut that's just my personal take and everybody will have different opinions over what makes for a compelling AI. I personally found it to work really well! It was different, and the character felt more alive than any other in the game. They have different needs, and the game designer for Bioshock most likely believed that having the NPC care for your health and "find" items and not be a chore to keep alive would give way more of a "partner" feeling than any more complex approach. It gives the player information and some sense of predictability. The enemies on any good stealth game will usually audibly point out that they saw something strange and if they will investigate, as well as saying "nevermind" after a hot minute - even if they're completely alone. The alien in A: Isolation needed it's AI to be fuzzy and a bit unpredictable to the player as well as having him "learn" by slowly taking into account which methods you were using. So I would define an AI as good in videogames if they serve the purpose that the game wants it to. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't call that good AI. You can make bots so "smart" or "good" that they're superhuman and, you guessed it, completely unfair and impossible to beat. The thing is, it doesn't have a practical limit to how fast it sees, or how fast it can go, or anything at all. Well, it isn't, but it also kind of is when we're talking about (current) videogames.ĭisconsidering other meanings, what we call Artificial Intelligence in games is essentially giving inanimate objects ways to "see" objects, paths, and players, and act according to their goal. TL DR I disagree on what makes good AI when it comes to videogames, but that's okay. r/CoOpGaming - A community for co-op gamingĮdit: Shit, I wrote a lot. r/xboxone - Xbox-specific subreddit for general Xbox news and discussion r/playstation, /r/PS4 & /r/PS5 - PlayStation-specific subreddits for general PlayStation news and discussion r/pcgaming - PC gaming-specific subreddit for general PC gaming news, discussion and gaming tech support r/nintendo - Nintendo-specific subreddit for general Nintendo news and discussion r/shouldibuythisgame - Find out what's worth getting. r/gamingsuggestions - Go here to help you find your next game to play r/gaming4gamers - Discussion, bar the Hivemind Top-level comments must be at least 100 characters in length.Accounts must be at least one month old.External Links must follow these guidelines No topics that belong in other subreddits This subreddit shouldn't be used for advice of any kind.
